</idCitation>
<idAbs>The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) produced the Mineral Information Layer for Oregon-Release 4 (MILO-Release 4) as a geospatial database that stores and manages information regarding Oregon's mineral occurrences, prospects, and mines; it is the primary way in which the State extracts, researches, and displays its available historical mining and mineral resource information. This feature class shows mineral-related information for the following commodities: metals (elements, metallic, and oxides), industrial minerals (non-metallic minerals and materials, including gemstones), mineral fuel (coal and oil shale), and aggregate (sand and gravel and stone). MILO contains 24,664 mineral occurrences, prospects, and mines in Oregon. Understand that recreation in or around inactive mine sites is extremely dangerous, and can result in serious injury or death. Stay out and stay alive!</idAbs>
<idPurp>The purpose of this MILO-Release 4 is for use as reference material supporting local- to statewide-scale mineral resource and environmental assessments. These data provide a searchable catalogue with links to supporting digital documentation that allows users to extract, research, and display historical mining and mineral resource information.</idPurp>
<idCredit>This update and release of MILO-4 was supported through a grant from the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP) under cooperative agreement number G23AP00218-01 (2023). Additional funds were provided by the State of Oregon.</idCredit>

<measDesc>Attribute accuracy is tested by manual comparison of the source and hard copy plots. However, for those points that do not have a corresponding mark on a digital U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000-scale quadrangle (DRG), the accuracy of this data is dependent on (1) detail level (e.g. location information) of the source material and (2) interpretation procedures for capturing that source. Field checking of the data was not performed.</measDesc>
</report>
<report type="DQConcConsis">
<measDesc>No duplicated features exist although individual point features may overlap and share the same coordinates but have differences in attribute(s). Because the data were collected and reported by numerous people, the descriptions provided are not highly consistent in structure or terminology or similar characteristics may be described differently. In attempt for some consistency some terminology was updated to a single common usage. For example, values Incorporated, Inc, Company, Co, Corporation, and Corp were changed to Inc., Co., and Corp. respectively when appropriate. Alternatively values Co or Co. were changed to County when applicable. Variations of unnamed or NA, prospect, quarry, sand pit, etc. were also updated to a single searchable value.</measDesc>

<report type="DQCompOm">
<measDesc>This feature class representing mines, prospects, and occurrences covers the entire state of Oregon and includes some points located in adjacent states. A number of attributes are sparsely populated.</measDesc>
</report>
<report dimension="horizontal" type="DQAbsExtPosAcc">
<measDesc>For mines, prospect, and mineral occurrences (including aggregate sources), the positional quality of each varies widely or is entirely unknown especially where their location information was obtained from older published and unpublished sources. For example, in older sources location information is often reported in a narrative format and are accurate within a mile and most to within a quarter mile. Those in newer publications are usually reported by subdivisions of a section of land (Public Land Survey System or PLSS) or by latitude and longitude, and consequently, are probably accurate within a quarter of a mile, and most within an eighth of a mile. The digitizing method for locating the mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences involved heads-up digitization from U.S. Geological Survey Digital Raster (DRG) Image of 1:24,000-scale quadrangles on the computer screen by using a computer mouse to scribe the feature. With that said the following steps were taken to check each point feature's positional accuracy by 1) matching a mark (symbol) on the DRG and 2) inspecting each 2005 Digital Orthophoto Quarter-Quadrangles (DOQQs) for a mine-related disturbance. The accuracy of this data depends on a number of different types of errors: geodetic, machine, cartographic, and random errors. Not least of which depends on the level of detail included in the source material and the interpretation procedures for capturing that source. Nevertheless, the positional accuracy for many of the sites is much improved, now at least points overlay corresponding topographic mark. Still accuracy of this data is dependent on the level of detail of the source material and the interpretation procedures for capturing that source, at best this accuracy is no more than 30 to 40 ft.</measDesc>

<measDesc>A combination of lidar 3 ft pixel bare earth DEM (approximately 1 point every 0.3 meters), and a 10m pixel bare earth DEM (approximately 1 point every 10 meters) served as elevation model(s). Not all resources were tested to evaluate the degree to which these inaccuracies exist. Lidar-derived bare earth elevation model vertical accuracy is typically less than 1 foot.</measDesc>

<prcStep>
<stepDesc>The predecessor and foundation for the Mineral Information Layer for Oregon (MILO) was a 1991 database version referred to as the Mineral Information Layer for Oregon by County (MILOC; Gray, 1991, 1993). MILOC was originally created in dBASE III+ format, within which was information for location, commodity, and other data for a 7,899 mineral occurrences, prospects, and mines statewide. MILOC was later converted to a GIS format and renamed MILO-1 (i.e., MILO-Release 1). The GIS-based MILO-1 database was not released to the public.
Release 2 (MILO-2) was published in 2010 MILO-2 and listed 21,101 mineral occurrences, prospects, and mines (Niewendorp and Geitgey, 2010). The substantial increase in sites displayed in MILO-2 was chiefly the result of data extracted from several sources: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Resources Data System (MRDS), Computerized Resources Information Bank (CRIB), and U.S. Bureau of Mines' Mineral Industry Location Subsystem (MILS) main frame databases that resulted in the addition of approximately 700 records; Two unpublished data sets from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). These datasets listed aggregate sources and quality tests for ~2,000 sites not originally compiled in MILOC/MILO-1; and Mining-related marks/symbols (e.g., aggregate site[s], borrow pits, quarries, gravel pits, and mine/prospect site[s]) from the ~ 1,866 USGS 1:24,000-scale 7.5-minute topographic quadrangle maps covering Oregon. Visual inspection and heads-up digitizing of topographic quadrangle maps added nearly 9,000 sites to MILO-2. Release 3 (MILO-3) moved the legacy MILO databases to a format consistent with the U.S. Geological Survey Geologic Map Schema (GeMS). The MILO-3 geodatabase also spatially linked scanned historical large-format maps (1,954 Adobe Portable Document Format [PDF] files) and mining records and reports (4,637 Adobe PDFs) with specific mine sites. The mining data itself and linked map documents are available on a searchable and filterable web map hosted on the DOGAMI website (https://www.oregon.gov/dogami/milo/Pages/ohmi.aspx) as well as a map service. MILO-4 lists 24,664 mineral occurrences, prospects, and mines; 1,348 points have been added beyond the 23,316 locations shown in MILO-3. The notable increase in sites is chiefly the result of data extracted from the following sources: Mining-related marks/symbols from version 3.0 of the USGS_TopoMinesSymbols_24k_Points; Visual inspection and heads-up digitizing of high-resolution 3-m lidar imagery for abandoned mine land features in and around the North Santiam, Quartzville, Blue River, and Bohemia mining districts in the Oregon Cascades; and United State Geological Survey Mineral Resource Data System, MRDS-fUS41 dataset. A new feature class named Assay Returns, includes 15,405 individual scanned analytical records as PDF files, houses analytical results obtained from DOGAMIs in-house fire assay, chemical, and spectrograph laboratories between 1937 and 1985. </stepDesc>
